SOS Children's Villages USA ("SOS-USA") is the United States philanthropic affiliate of a large worldwide Federation, SOS Children's Villages International. A public charity, SOS-USA draws revenue from sponsors of children and villages, sustainers, major donors, foundations, and corporations, across direct mail, digital and direct cultivation.

The Opportunity:

The Business Development Manager will work closely with the Business Development and Grants Management team to grow the pipeline of new corporate and foundation partners. This position includes extensive prospecting and research; the writing of compelling concepts and proposals reflecting innovative programs and initiatives in approximately 10 countries; management of a reporting and stewardship calendar for the portfolio; and close coordination with colleagues from across the global organization - all done with a focus on the overarching goal of increasing robust corporate and foundation revenue growth for SOS USA. This position will report to the Associate Director of Program Strategy and Business Development and will also work closely with the Program Manager.

The Business Development Manager helps drive fundraising success to ensure the financial health and sustainable impact of SOS Children's Villages USA.

Key Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prospect and qualify new and existing foundation leads and grow portfolio to achieve ambitious revenue goals.
  • Work closely with Associate Director, program staff and technical experts to source key information, inspire new and cutting-edge programming options, and craft compelling concepts and proposals that advance priority initiatives. Expect to be the main writer and editor on these proposals.
  • Build project budgets and budget narratives with assistance from the Business Development and Grants Management team.
  • Synthesize large amounts of M&E data and develop narratives from these impact numbers.
  • Position SOS USA as a competitive thought leader by creating a range of high-quality, industry relevant deliverables that speak to funder interests. Formats may include executive summaries, pitch decks, one-pagers, case studies, concept notes, and more.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of SOS programs, the competitive landscape, and best-in-class peer organizations.
  • Remotely develop subject matter expertise and deep familiarity with the current work and future needs of SOS Children's Villages and the key populations we serve. Technical areas include economic empowerment, family strengthening, youth employability, systems change approaches, child protection, and foster care.
  • Manage stewardship and new outreach for a portfolio of foundation and corporate contacts.
  • Accurately track and report on KPIs, ensuring that critical activities are carried out at targeted volume in order to deliver expected results.
  • Establish robust institutional knowledge by tracking all foundation correspondence, meeting notes, solicitation progress, and action items in the SOS USA database, while maintaining an up-to-date grants calendar.
  • Clearly articulate the organization's core mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities.
  • Commit to aspire for and maintain, report, and respond to the required conduct of the Child Protection Policy of SOS International. (Safeguarding children - SOS Children's Villages International (


  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 5 years of professional, competitive proposal-writing experience.
  • Experience working at an international NGO.
  • Track record of securing grants and partnerships.
  • Experience successfully researching, writing, submitting, and securing awards for foundation and corporate partners.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet demanding deadlines within a fast-paced, collaborative environment - without sacrificing quality.
  • First-rate writing and analytic competencies, including personally writing winning foundation proposals, collateral, and reports.
    • Work samples will be requested of final candidates.
  • Superior verbal presentation skills and detail orientation, with proven ability to synthesize complex material quickly and convert technical and research information into compelling narratives for prospects and donors.
  • Success building remote relationships.
  • Self-starter; able to work with minimal supervision while meeting agreed-upon metrics and goals.
  • Experience with CRM database.
  • Passion for the work of SOS Children's Villages and the vital role we play in empowering children, youth, families, and entire communities.

This position can be based in Washington, DC or remote within the US.
