Program Manager, Livelihoods

 SOS Children's Villages (SOS), one of the largest NGOs dedicated to the care of orphaned and vulnerable children, is seeking a Program Manager to oversee and develop a portfolio of grant-funded programs. The position is located in Washington, DC.

Consideration preference will be extended to candidates who supplement the required qualifications with direct experience in (1) multi-dimensional livelihood development, (2) economic empowerment, and/or (3) remote implementation of projects in developing countries.

 Position Summary

The Program Manager is an integral team member of the Corporate & Foundation Relations Department, while also backstopping, representing, and supporting programs implemented in multiple SOS offices overseas. With limited supervision, the Program Manager will provide leadership and coordination in the areas of program support, reporting and communications, coordination and country representation, and new business development.

 Organizational and time management skills are crucial as this position requires managing competing priorities and multitasking throughout each day. This position reports to the Director of Program Strategy & Partnerships.


The Program Manager provides remote support to country offices to ensure the successful implementation of projects funded by institutional U.S. donors. The essential duties and responsibilities of the Program Manager include, but are not limited to, the following functional areas:

 Program Support:

  • Ensure the delivery of high quality programs by supporting the development and execution of project plans, monitoring progress, and conducting detailed review of implementation and spending.
  • Implement and manage changes and interventions to ensure SOS achieves program goals and financial compliance, helping to position the organization for future funding opportunities.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff and leadership to facilitate the documentation of promising practices, lessons learned, and improvement areas, including short-term technical assistance needs.
  • Remotely build effective peer working relationships with country teams.
  • Identify and coordinate technical assistance for program design, work plan development, reporting, M&E, and operations research.
  • Conduct monitoring field visits as directed by donor-funded programs.
  • Review and provide comments on sub-agreements and grantee reports.
  • Develop and maintain an evaluation method to assess program strengths and identify areas for improvement.

 Reporting & Communications:

  • Write donor reports, coordinating inputs from multiple sources, and facilitating the internal review process to ensure timely submission.
  • Create compelling statistics, stories, and data visualizations to convey program impact.
  • Develop deliverables decks, one-pagers, case studies, white papers to showcase programs.
  • Lead analysis and documentation of best practices and innovations taking place in-country.
  • Collaborate with marketing teams on communication strategy.
  • Develop and implement a calendar of donor stewardship touchpoints.

 Coordination & Country Representation:

  • Maintain frequent correspondence with internal points of contact with the global headquarters and country offices.
  • Participate in (and occasionally lead) department meetings, brown bags, lectures, and presentations to stay current and share key information.
  • Respond to external or internal requests for information, with input provided by the country team as necessary.

 New Business Development and Proposal Writing: The Program Manager plays a critical role in securing new resources for SOS-USA. Duties may include:

  • Participate in new business development initiatives, including planning, prospecting, drafting robust narrative, reviewing, editing and formatting.
  • Design of new programs in overseas locations.
  • Identification of potential funding sources aligned with program objectives.
  • Development of proposals and following up with potential donors, as needed.


  • Bachelors' degree.
  • 3-5 years' relevant experience managing international grant-funded programs in a public or private sector environment, preferably non-profit.
  • Minimum 3 years' prior experience fundraising from foundations, government and/or corporations and managing the awarded funds.
  • Success resolving implementation challenges and influencing without direct authority.
  • Ability and willingness to change work practices/hours to accommodate coordination with country teams and deliver against tight or unanticipated deadlines.
  • First-rate project and time management skills with analytical competency for expert reporting.
  • Able to work effectively in an environment requiring independent and creative efforts.
  • Track record of stakeholder management success with excellent interpersonal communication, writing, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to travel as needed in support of program and organizational needs (up to 20 percent), often to remote locations within developing countries.
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented with strong work ethic and a collaborative, professional team spirit.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook and Excel.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
