SOS Children's Villages Overview

SOS Children's Villages-USA is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC that raises funds for SOS Children's Villages International. These funds go to over 570 SOS villages in 135 countries around the world to provide permanent, loving homes for orphaned or abandoned children. Each home is part of a village, and each child has a loving mother -- often for the first time in his or her life. Beyond creating and sustaining villages, SOS also supports emergency relief, schools, social programs and medical facilities worldwide.

Opportunity Description

We're looking for enthusiastic students to join our team for a minimum of 20 hours a week for at least 3 months (longer opportunities are available). The Marketing and Fundraising Intern will be involved in a range of projects and initiatives supporting the fundraising and communications efforts of our grassroots fundraising programs.

Specific projects will include but are not limited:

  • Help develop fundraising and communications strategies to acquire and retain donors and sponsors;
  • Research current events and organization specific stories;
  • Create written content for a variety of audiences;
  • Support donor stewardship activities through direct donor communications;
  • Support database and donor data management;
  • Learn about tracking results and statistics to evaluate program effectiveness; and
  • Assist Manager, Annual Giving & Stewardship in researching, qualifying and ranking new prospective individual donors for Mid-Level fundraising program.

This internship is intended for undergraduate and graduate students interested in fundraising, marketing and communications and international development. Experience and/or strong interest in child rights issues, will be preferred.


  • College graduate or currently enrolled as an undergraduate student
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong written and oral communications skills (English);
  • Ability to work independently and without close supervision;
  • Quick learner, able to rapidly absorb and distill new information;
  • Highly collaborative work style; and
  • Creative thinker, effective communicator and active problem solver. 
  • This is an unpaid internship though subsidized metro benefits are available. Credit hours can be provided if applicable.
